Here's proof that this had happened to Ani B, a former member of Yelp. Let me point out that Yelp's staff was negligent in even solving the problem for her. They should have called the police so that the suspect would have been arrested. This is from a PM conversation that Ani B. had with the author of this blog.
Well, it's a bit of a long story...but here it goes.
Since joining yelp this is the 2nd time I've received messages from orange head accounts and troll accounts who had personal information about me such as where I live, where I went to high school, etc. I've never shared this information with any yelper, so it's been scaring me.
On top of that, I had a scary run-in with a man and his friend this weekend while I was out with some friends. He told me saw my profile on Yelp, we talked for a brief moment, and then both went about our individual evenings. When I left the location, him and his friend must also have left and followed me in their car. A friend who was in the car with me noticed we were being followed so we called the police. I feel that Yelp needs to implement at least some privacy features. It's just too dangerous the way it is now.
I took off all of my pictures except one and changed my avatar out of a concern for privacy. I'm considering shutting down this account all together as I have a ton to deal with right now in terms of school and don't want to worry about the potential threat of having a public profile on this site. Even if I do keep my account, I don't think I'll be participating on Talk as often as before. I just don't feel that the site is safe. It was truly great meeting you on Yelp Talk and I hope we'll keep in touch either way.
Best wishes,
Ani
